KOTA KINABALU: A construction worker survived a fall from the sixth floor to the basement while working on an elevator shaft. He escaped with only a leg injury.

A spokesman of the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department said 55-year-old Nasir Sammah was winched out of the elevator shaft by firemen who received a distress call at 12.28pm yesterday.

The victim was working on the shaft at the construction site for a 25-storey mixed development building here.

According to the spokesman, firemen had to winch down the shaft to reach the victim before using the pulley method to get him out of the shaft on a stretcher.

The rescue operation ended in an hour, he added.
