SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan legislative assembly may be dissolved on June 1 to pave the way for the state polls, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

“I am proposing that the Negri assembly be dissolved on June 1.

“Let’s see what the Selangor MB and Penang Chief Minister have to say when we meet.

“They may want to dissolve theirs a week or two before or after us, but the elections can be held simultaneously as the Election Commission only needs to make sure it is held within 60 days.”

An informal meeting of the leaders of the three Pakatan Harapan-held states will take place at the end of this month to finalise the matter, said Aminuddin, who is PKR vice-president, to reporters at the Sunrise MCL Land Chinese New Year open house.

He was asked about a hint from Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor on Wednesday that the state assembly will be dissolved after June 18 to pave the way for the state polls.

Muhammad Sanusi said this was based on several factors, including the fasting month, the Aidilfitri celebration, the haj season and the Aidiladha celebration prior to that.

He said the assembly might only be dissolved after June 18, which marks the birthday of the Sultan of Kedah.

Apart from the three Pakatan-held states, state elections are also due this year in the PAS-controlled states of Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.

Aminuddin said even if Kedah dissolves its assembly after June 18, the polls in the six states can still be held simultaneously.

“If the Pakatan-controlled states dissolve their respective assemblies at the end of May or early June and the PAS states dissolve theirs later, the polls in all six states can still be held at the same time.

“Again, this will be up to the Election Commission to decide,” he added.

However, Aminuddin said if the Pakatan presidential council directs the Negri Sembilan, Selangor and Penang governments to dissolve their respective assemblies at a different date, he would abide by it.

On Jan 16, Aminuddin was quoted as saying that the state assembly is expected to be dissolved in May.

He had said that this was based on unofficial discussions among the Mentris Besar and Chief Ministers of the six states at the recent Conference of Rulers meeting.

This, he said, was to allow the polls to be held simultaneously in June or July.
