PETALING JAYA: Many notable figures from MCA turned out to support the charity event to raise funds for the UTAR Hospital at the Sun Hin Loong restaurant here.

Organised by the Petaling Jaya Coffeeshop Association (PJCA) at the popular eatery in SS2 yesterday, the event contributed around RM25,000 towards the construction of the UTAR Hospital project that is being built near UTAR’s campus in Kampar, Perak.

PJCA president Keu Kok Meng said the group decided to organise the fundraiser as a way to give back to the community after reading about the project’s purpose and noble cause in the newspapers.

“When we heard that the UTAR Hospital was being set up as a not-for-profit health facility to help the less fortunate, we immediately contacted MCA to ask them how we could help.

“We also wanted to continue the tradition set by our predecessors 30 years ago, when PJCA, at the time, also helped fund the construction of the Tunku Abdul Rahman College,” he added.

The MCA members who turned up yesterday included party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, his deputy Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, secretary general Datuk Chong Sin Woon and youth chief Datuk Nicole Wong, among others.

Other notable attendees included former MCA president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, former secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Ting Chew Peh, the Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors’ General Association (MSCSPGA) president Wong Tue Hoon, MSCSPGA honourary secretary Datuk Tan Chnan Yeang, PJCA executive adviser Tang Sui Tee and honorary secretary Cheah Poo Kuang.

Keu said PJCA also held similar fundraising campaigns at the Megah Good Luck restaurant in Taman Megah and the Lai Kong restaurant in Sunway Mentari.

“There was also a fundraising dinner that we held last month on July 28, where we managed to raise around RM100,000 in one night.

“I also donated to the fund as well, along with other members of my association, friends and coffeeshop owners,” he said, adding that they are expecting to raise about RM300,000 from all the events and donations combined.
