KUALA LUMPUR: A civil servant has been arrested over the theft of a Touch ’n Go card belonging to one of the victims of the recent landslide in Batang Kali, Selangor.
Selangor acting police chief Deputy Comm Datuk S. Sasikala Devi said the 27-year-old suspect was arrested in the Klang Valley on Friday.
“We also seized items believed to belong to the victim during the arrest,” she told reporters at the Ampang Jaya police headquarters here yesterday.
Police, she said, are in the midst of obtaining a remand order on the suspect.
On Jan 1, Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt Suffian Abdullah said they had detected a social media post believed to be by a family member of one of the Dec 16 landslide victims.
The post alleged that an irresponsible individual was using a Touch ’n Go card belonging to the victim.
Two reports were lodged in connection to the incident and police opened an investigation into the alleged theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
Earlier, Chinese media had reported that the family of a teacher who died in the landslide tragedy was pleading for the return of her personal belongings, especially her mobile phone, that had gone missing.
David Ling Mun Siong, the husband of Liu Pei Si, said his wife’s Touch ’n Go card, which is linked to his ewallet, has been used to pay tolls since Dec 22 last year, just days after the Dec 16 incident.
“There are many pictures of our family together on the phone. … Let us at least have some memories to cling to,” he said.
