KUALA LUMPUR: Nine Malaysians and two dependants who were evacuated from Ukraine to Poland are expected to arrive here today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said in a Facebook post.

“Alhamdulillah, nine Malaysians and their dependents have safely been evacuated.

“On the basis of friendship and diplomacy, we also helped evacuate a Singaporean national, along with our Malaysian convoy to Poland.”

Bernama reported that Ismail Sabri also acknowledged the Singaporean High Commission’s appreciation and gratitude for the assistance rendered by Malaysia.

The Prime Minister said the Malaysian government cherished its close ties with the country.

“We are in this together and should work together as an Asean family,” he said.

In a tweet yesterday, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah said the Malaysian convoy was led by chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Malaysian Embassy in Ukraine, Fadhilah Daud.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Higher Education said a Malaysian studying at the University of Lviv is also safe.

It said in a statement that the student was with other Malaysians at the Malaysian Embassy in Warsaw, Poland and would be brought home soon.

As for Malaysian students in Russia, the ministry said they would continue to stay at their respective universities since they are far from the conflict zone.

The ministry said it will continue to monitor the conflict to ensure the students’ safety via the Education Malaysia (EML) office in London.
