AYER HITAM: Barisan Nasional wants to win the state government with a two-thirds majority by capturing at least 38 seats of the 56 seat-assembly in the Johor election, says Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said a simple majority would not provide the stability needed by the state government to lead.

“It must be no less than 38 seats, it is so that we can garner a two-thirds majority (in the state assembly),” he said during his speech to party supporters at the Ayer Hitam polling district centre yesterday.

Speaking to reporters later, Ahmad Zahid said that Barisan was confident of winning the state election despite multi-cornered fights in all seats.

“The ‘winds of change’ has blown in Johor, not just among the Malays, but Indians and also some Chinese urban voters, who are now willing to consider Barisan candidates,” he added.

Ahmad Zahid also said that Barisan would launch its election manifesto soon and it would be aimed at enticing unregistered voters and 18-year-olds.

The Election Commission said that there are 239 candidates contesting in all 56 state seats in Johor.

During the Melaka state election last year, Barisan secured a two-thirds majority after it won 21 out of 28 state seats.
