[UPDATE – 3:30pm, 27 July 2022] TNB has released an update via its social media channels revealing that the power outages affecting all involved locations has been fully resolved. The company adds that the supply disruption this afternoon was caused by a fault in one of the equipment at the Yong Peng North main entrance substation in Johor. It has resulted in load shedding of 2.2GW which is 10% of the total supply demand in Peninsular Malaysia.

Malaysians are reporting that a large number of areas in Peninsular Malaysia are currently experiencing power outages. Complaints regarding this unexpected issue have been shared by multiple users on Twitter since earlier today.
According to the reports, areas that are affected include numerous locations in the Klang Valley region, including the main terminal of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Suria KLCC, just to name a few. Other states within Peninsular Malaysia that are also experiencing the sudden outage include Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, Penang, and Pahang – potentially with even more locations that are yet to be reported.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) only released a statement acknowledging the issue earlier this afternoon. In a post it shared on both of its accounts on Twitter and Facebook, the company states that its technical team is actively working to resolve the outages while at the same time attempting to identify the cause of the problem. About an hour later via another update, it explained that the outage involved the loss of 2.2GW of power, which is 10% of the entire supply demand.
The outages caused some airport operations at KLIA to be ceased, disruption of train services on the Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT Line, reduced cellular coverage by several telcos, severed internet connections by Unifi, as well as cancellations of bookings and deliveries by Grab and other similar services. Worryingly, the city council of Kuala Lumpur also reported that several traffic lights are also affected, while the KL Fire and Rescue Department confirmed that there have been reports of people stuck in elevators.
At the time of writing, Malaysia Airports Holding Bhd and Rapid KL have confirmed that power has been restored and their services are now resuming as per usual. Other affected services have yet to provide any updates.

On top of determining the cause of the power outages, TNB has yet to provide an expected time of completion for the ongoing maintenance. According to Malaysiakini, the energy company said via a Careline call that the issue will require around 1 to 3 hours to be resolved. We’ll keep you posted on any important developments that follow.
