Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) console has officially been on the market for a little more than two years. So, no surprise then, that half-whispers, gossip, and the usual “did you know?” mutterings about a PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro console, that is rumoured to already be in development.

According to a report by Insider Gaming, development of a PS5 Pro was already underway at Sony. Additionally, it says that 2024 could be the year when the Japanese brand’s gaming division will release the updated version of its current generation console.

One source close to the gaming news site also said that another PS5 console – not the Pro – will come with a new “detachable” disk drive and that this new model will phase out the current versions of the console, currently available on the market. This is “just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation,” said the source.

In the world of console gaming, console generations usually have a shelf life of anywhere between 10 and 13 years, after which, Sony effectively ends any and all support for said machine. It’s a standard practice in the industry; cease the support for what is now an archaic piece of technology and move on to what it can offer through the latest technology has to offer. For that matter, support for the PS4 is still ongoing, but there is no denying that the console is already showing its age, in regard to its performance and hardware.

As for specs and performance of the PS5 Pro, details of the console are still exceedingly limited. But like the PS4 Pro when it officially launch, it is safe to assume at this stage that we can expect the console to have improved visuals, performance, and speeds across the boards. On a related note, it’s also been rumoured that Sony may be planning on hosting a new PlayStation Showcase, just before the annual E3 event. Again, not surprising, given that the console maker has already “missed” showing up at the event since 2019, choosing instead to host its own State of Play events, which also happens a couple of times a year.
