Singaporeans with outstanding traffic fines will not be allowed to exit Malaysia, according to the Director of Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) Bukit Aman, CP Mat Kasim Karim. This also includes those with warrants of arrest, who will be arrested and brought to court immediately.
If they are charged on the same day, the offenders will be detained before being brought for arraignment the next day unless they are able to provide a bailor who is a Malaysian citizen. Mat Kasim said between 2016 to 2021, as many as 108,757 out of 143,427 summonses that were issued to motorists from the city-state are still unpaid.
The director brushed off weak enforcement as the reason behind the high amount of unpaid summonses as JSPT through the Johor contingent holds operations to take action against Singaporean motorists all year long. Hence, he welcomes the implementation of the Road Charge and Vehicle Entry Permit system at the Causeway as Singapore vehicles entering Malaysia will have their entry and details recorded, including any outstanding summonses.
Additionally, JSPT will be using the iCOPS vehicle number plate identification system to trace traffic offenders as well as tracing vehicles reported missing or stolen. On top of that, the in-car radar will also be used to issue traffic fines on the spot.
