While we’re waiting for the S23 lineup to be revealed, Samsung is giving us a treat with an announcement for the Galaxy A14 5G, the follow-up to last year’s budget 5G smartphone. Looking at the specs, you might have trouble finding any differences between the new model and the previous one, but the minimal upgrades might mean that it won’t get a price hike, or at least not a significant one.
The biggest improvement with the A14 over its predecessor is the display where the resolution has been bumped up from 720p to a Full HD display. Other than a nominally bigger 6.6-inch LCD screen, it retains the 90Hz refresh rate. Design-wise, the phone replaces the rounded edges with more industrial flat edges as well as what seems to be a textured backplate.
The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G runs on the exact same internals as its predecessor, with a MediaTek Dimensity 700 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and either 64 or 128GB of internal storage. There is also a dedicated memory card slot for storage expansion up to 1TB.
Similarly, the rear camera module seems to have been untouched with the same triple-camera setup consisting of a 50MP primary lens, a 2MP macro sensor, and a depth sensor, while the front tear-drop notch houses an upgraded 13MP selfie shooter. Notably, the 4G-variant of the A13 carried an ultra-wide camera, but it was removed in the 5G version.
Nothing has changed with the battery life, but there doesn’t seem to be much to complain about with a large 5,000mAh powering the low-end device. As for connectivity, it supports 5G, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, and the phone includes a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Samsung Galaxy A14 5G will ship with Android 13 and the company promises two years of Android upgrades along with four years of security updates. The tech giant has not revealed the price or availability yet other than a coming release in Spain, but we found out that the A14 has already passed SIRIM certification on 9 December, which means that it won’t be long before we see it launched in Malaysia.
