Xiaomi has quietly unveiled two new budget smartphones, the Redmi A2 and A2 Plus running on Android 12 (Go Edition). These phones are listed on Xiaomi’s global website, but oddly enough, there is no pricing or availability date yet, but they will undoubtedly be in an affordable price range given that the A1 came with a price tag of only RM359.

The Redmi A2 and A2 Plus both sport a 6.52-inch 720p display with a 20:9 aspect ratio. In fact, the two devices are the exact same phone with the exception being that the A2 Plus comes with a fingerprint scanner on the back — they even come in the same colour options of blue, green, and black.

For the internals, the phones run on a MediaTek Helio G36 chipset paired with either 2GB or 3GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. While that’s fairly little, the devices are equipped with microSD card slots for storage expansion up to 1TB.

The camera setup for the Redmi A2 and A2 Plus is very basic, with the rear featuring an 8MP main camera along with a QVGA auxiliary lens, while the front houses a 5MP selfie shooter. As for connectivity, the phones support 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, FM radio, and only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi — they are also equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Powering the entry-level devices is a 5,000mAh battery that Xiaomi claims can last up to 19 hours of video playback. Unfortunately, the company fitted the devices with an outdated microUSB port, which charges at a paltry speed of 10W.

As previously mentioned, Redmi has still not revealed the pricing or availability of the Redmi A2 and A2 Plus. There is also no word yet on whether they will be coming to the Malaysian market but upon checking, both budget phones are already listed in SIRIM’s database, meaning that a local launch is imminent.
