Nokia G22

As the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 is just around the corner, you can expect the air to be filled with news from phone makers. Among those that have fired early salvos is HMD Global who have announced several new phones for MWC 2023 including the Nokia G22.

In many ways, the new G22 seemed to be not far off from its predecessor, G21 which was released in Malaysia last year.  For one, the 2023 release features the same processor in the form of Unisoc Tiger T606 as well as the same 4GB RAM and up to 128GB internal storage although its MicroSD card support is slightly better at 2TB as opposed to G21 which maxed out at 512GB.

G22 has also been equipped with a 6.52-inch HD+ display that has a 90Hz refresh rate just like G21. However, the screen on the new model is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Photography-wise, the G22 setup is generally similar to G21 which includes 50MP primary camera, 2MP macro camera, and 2MP depth sensor on its back. This also applies to the phone’s selfie camera as HMD Global continues to utilize an 8MP front camera.

Even the G22’s battery is the same capacity as G21 at 5050mAh although the phone’s charging capability is slightly higher at 20W, compared to its predecessor’s limit of 18W. Instead of a texturized back cover, the IP52-rated G22 seemed to feature a rather smooth finish though.

The biggest difference between the G22 and its predecessor is the fact that the phone is designed with repairability in mind. This is to the extent of having a partnership with the globally-renowned champion of self-repair, iFixit.

Through the new cooperation, the G22 is the first Nokia phone to receive complete repair solutions from iFixit. This is not only involved official repair guide but also Fix Kits as well as spare parts and HMD Global noted that if a user made the repair using the materials & parts that were sourced from iFixit, it is considered an authorised repair that will not affect the phone’s official warranty.

While the availability and local pricing of G22 for Malaysia is not yet known, HMD Global noted that the phone has a global average price tag that starts at EUR179 (~RM840). The phone will be making its way into the market starting from 8 March onwards.
