Huawei Mate Xs 2 launch China

Huawei has recently unveiled the Mate Xs 2, slightly a year after its last take on the foldable form factor. While it is only available in China at the moment, that is about to change very soon as the new model will be receiving its global launch on 18 May.

A day later, the foldable will be heading straight to Malaysia in what we expect to be yet another huge outing for the brand in our market. According to the teasers that Huawei Malaysia has put up online, the Mate Xs 2’s Malaysian launch will be joined by two more phones in the form of the P50 and nova Y70.

Quite a number of wearables will be making their debut here at the same time including the Huawei Watch GT 3 Pro, Watch Fit 2, Watch Kids 4 Pro, and FreeBuds SE. The trailer has also mentioned Band 7 alongside the Watch D which has a built-in blood pressure monitor and we had the privilege of checking it out in action earlier this week.

The Mate Xs 2 marked Huawei’s return to the outward folding design that the company utilized in the original Mate X back in 2019 as well as its successor, the 2020’s Mate Xs. If you can recall, the company has opted for the inward folding design for last year’s Mate X 2 which is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold devices.

Huawei claimed that the double rotor hinge mechanism within its new Mate Xs 2 leaves no visible creases which is a bold claim that we definitely would like to see for ourselves. When unfolded, the device provides 7.8-inch viewing space through its OLED screen that has a native resolution of 2480 x 2200, 120Hz refresh rate, and supports the Huawei M-Pen 2s stylus.

Once folded, the display would shrink to a 6.5-inch 2480 x 1176 screen. Pre-installed with Harmony OS 2, the Mate Xs 2 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G processor and is also accompanied by up 12GB of RAM as well as 512GB of internal storage.

In terms of photography, the Mate Xs 2 relies on a 50MP main camera, 13MP ultra-wide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera alongside a 10.7MP selfie camera. For those who have been so used to seeing Leica’s name on Huawei devices, that does not apply to the Mate Xs 2 though.

When it comes to the battery, it depends on the respective variant of the foldable phone like the Mate Xs 2 with 8GB RAM has a 4600mAh battery while the beefier 12GB RAM Collector’s Edition model comes with a 4880mAh battery. Despite these differences, the maximum charging rate for both variants is still 66W.

Naturally, the Malaysian pricing of the device will likely be announced during the 19 May launch event but if you need a comparison, the Mate Xs 2 has a starting price of CNY 9,999 in China. That equals around RM6,478 which is rather hefty, so you better be prepared if you planning to get your hands on it once the new foldable arrived in our market.
